Online Marketing and Search Engine Optimization Tips for Small & Medium Businesses

Google Buzz – Is it an Attempt to Kill Facebook and Twitter?

Google just announced its new service called “Buzz”. While it is Google’s attempt to enter the social marketing arena and take on the growing influence of Facebook and Twitter, it would make Gmail so much more integrated and tempting to use.

Buzz would make Gmail easier to connect in real time, enabling you to share and consume content including media with friends and family. You will automatically follow the people you e-mail and chat with, on a regular basis. It is Google’s attempt to become more social and show results in real time.

Is Page Load Time Going to be a Ranking Factor on Google?

Google wants your website to be faster. Matt Cutts recent interview at PubCon clearly indicates this. So if your website is slow, pull-up your sleeves and start working to make it faster. It would not only make your visitors happy, but can also improve your search rankings.

  • Identify garbage codes on your pages and remove it. Html, css, javascript, any junk that has piled up there should go.
  • Follow web standards. Check w3c validators to remove and correct your codes.
  • Happy talk should die. Check, edit and remove unnecessary content that does not create value.
  • Reduce graphic images and file sizes or other media which is creating overload without creating much design and usability benefits.
  • Be real stingy

Website load speed is a usability issue. By making your site faster you are providing users a pleasure equivalent to driving on the freeways.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 101, Part 1

Establishing a Website Domain Name

Establishing a website domain name and a high PageRank on Google takes significant time, efforts and commitment. There are several factors that improve your search rankings and the Google PageRank. Two most important factors are, doing proper on-page optimization and site structuring, and getting substantial amount of high ranking relevant sites linking to yours.

For new websites it is a big challenge to get other leading sites in the industry linking to theirs. However, even those sites which have been around and doing business for years; their low rankings are an outcome of the lack of work, awareness, skills, or resources to implement the right optimization and link strategies. Surprising Changes on Google Search Results Pages (SERP)

I noticed a major change on Google.com search results page (SERP) today. Google.com moved the sponsored listings closer to the organic search results reducing the font size, while it’s country specific domains like Google.ca still show results in the old format with sponsored listing at far right corner.

Moving the paid search closer to the organic can have great effect of the clickthrough rates. While the click through rates of the pay per click paid campaigns will increase dramaticly, clickthrough rates of natural search results will see significant decline. If Google sticks with this layout, and extends it to its contry specific domains, it will have significant effect on the way you are getting your traffic and people click on the results.

If you are just relying on organic search results, expect to see your traffic and sales go down. On the other hand, if you are also running ppc campaigns, you should expect significant increase in your traffic. You will find your daily budget limits on your Google Adwords quickly getting exhausted, and should consider increasing that if you would like to see your campaigns running till the end of the day.

This also means that Google will now be earning much more money from AdWords.

What will happen to organic searches and all those who have been optimizing their websites over the years is to be seen. As we know it is much easier to gain, manage and manipulate traffic with ppc campaigns, does it mean that Google is forcing businesses to buy more ppc ads. In its quest to earn more revenues, is it trying to push and promote websites / pages having little depth and content and more sales pitch?

Does it have anything to do with the recent MSN – Yahoo deal? There are several questions popping up in my mind right now. Let’s see, probably the answers would be apparent in the next few months. But this will certainly effect the way businesses would be allocating money for their online marketing by reallocating more towards AdWords.
